Position: Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counseling Internship

Location: Illinois Youth Center / PEACE (Warrenville, Saint Charles and Chicago).

Schedule: Minimum of 16 hours per week, 24 hours preferred.

Position Overview:

The Youth Outreach Services Juvenile Justice Department works with youth ages 14 to 20 who are referred for Mental Health and Substance Use services. These youth are referred to the agency from the Department of Juvenile Justice. The SUD counseling intern while working with YOS staff, provides support to youth detained in the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice facility.The SUD intern will be responsible for:

  • Provide weekly services to assist with substance use or mental health issues.
  • Assisting clients with program orientation
  • Maintaining a caseload by:
    • Providing individual counseling sessions, group sessions, family engagement, and communication with referral sources.
    • Maintaining weekly case notes that reflect all communication about their clients
    • Developing and monitoring treatment plans for clients

The intern will master and utilize the 7 Challenges Program to allow clients to focus on past and future decisions and consequences and make their own choices regarding drug and alcohol use.This is an unpaid internship; however, this position is eligible for academic credits. YOS is approved at many colleges/universities and can make necessary accommodations with most schools.

Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Master's level student with a concentration in counseling or social work.
